Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add lemon juice and vanilla extract, tossing to coat evenly.
- Transfer apple mixture to prepared baking dish, spreading into an even layer.
- In a medium bowl, combine oats, 3/4 cup flour, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- Add cold butter cubes to the oat mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fingertips to work butter into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Fold in nuts if using.
- Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over apples without pressing down.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool for 15-20 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
