Ingredients

Cocktail Base
  • 2 oz vodka premium quality
  • 1 oz fresh espresso hot or warm
  • 0.5 oz coffee liqueur KahlĂșa or Mr. Black
  • 0.25 oz simple syrup optional for sweetness
Garnish & Ice
  • 1 wedge fresh orange or thick zest strip
  • 3 whole coffee beans roasted
  • 1 cup ice cubes for shaking and serving

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne Strainer
  • Rocks glass

Method

  1. Brew a fresh shot of espresso and let it sit for a moment but do not let it go cold.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker generously with ice cubes.
  3. Pour the vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup (if using) over the ice.
  4. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to aerate the coffee oils and create foam.
  5. Place fresh large ice cubes into a chilled rocks glass.
  6. Strain the cocktail mixture over the ice in the glass.
  7. Squeeze the orange wedge or zest over the drink to release oils, then place on rim.
  8. Garnish with three coffee beans on top of the foam and serve immediately.

Notes

For the best foam, ensure your espresso is fresh (has crema) before shaking. Using a dark roast coffee provides the best flavor contrast with the orange.
