Festive appetizers made by stacking star-shaped puff pastry with layers of ham (or bacon) and melted cheese, topped with sesame seeds and a gold star.

Ingredients
  

Tree Structure
  • 2 sheets puff pastry thawed
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds for topping
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tsp water
Filling
  • 8 oz deli ham or cooked bacon/Canadian bacon
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese or Gruyère
Garnish
  • 1 bunch fresh parsley
  • 8 star picks gold, inedible

Equipment

  • Star Cookie Cutters (3 sizes)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pastry brush

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut puff pastry into stars using large, medium, and small cutters.
  3. Cut meat and cheese into shapes or small squares to fit inside the pastry stars.
  4. Assemble by stacking: Large pastry, filling, Medium pastry, filling, Small pastry.
  5. Brush the tops generously with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  7. Cool slightly, then insert a star pick into the top and garnish with parsley.

Notes

Ensure your puff pastry is still cold when you put it in the oven to ensure maximum puff. If it gets too warm during assembly, pop the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.
