Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a standard muffin tin with high-quality black cupcake liners.
- Whisk flour, sifted Dutch-process cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and optional espresso powder in a medium bowl.
- Cream softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
- Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Start and end with dry. Do not overmix.
- Fill liners 3/4 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in tin 5 minutes, then on a wire rack completely.
- Make the buttercream: beat softened butter until smooth, gradually add powdered sugar until fluffy. Mix in vanilla and heavy cream.
- Color buttercream with red gel coloring. Add a tiny amount of black for dramatic deep crimson. For deepest color, cover and let rest for 24-48 hours.
- Transfer stable buttercream to a piping bag with a petal tip. Pipe a center mound, then create realistic petals starting in center, overlapping and varying the angle outward. Maintain defined petals like image.
- Use a clean brush to dust the edges of the piped petals with luster dust for a mesmerizing, realistic glisten.
- Arrange on a tarnished vintage silver plate with scattered dark rose petals for dramatic, gothic presentation.
Notes
Achieving the deep, rich crimson requires quality gel food coloring and patience. Color development takes 24-48 hours. Ensure buttercream is stable and room temp for piping definition. For the realistic gothic aesthetic seen in image, serve on vintage silver.
