Ingredients

For the Croissant Bake
  • 8 large croissants preferably day-old
  • 8 slices quality ham thinly sliced
  • 2 cups Swiss cheese shredded
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives chopped
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream optional
For the Egg Wash
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch Baking Dish
  • Mixing bowls
  • Pastry brush
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or line with parchment paper.
  2. Slice each croissant horizontally, creating a top and bottom half, leaving them hinged on one side.
  3. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with Dijon mustard and garlic powder, whisking until well blended.
  4. Brush the inside of each croissant with the butter mixture, ensuring even coverage.
  5. Layer 1 slice of ham and approximately 1/4 cup of shredded Swiss cheese inside each croissant.
  6. Arrange filled croissants in the prepared baking dish, placing them snugly together.
  7. Prepare egg wash by beating together egg, milk, and salt. Brush generously over croissant tops.
  8. If using heavy cream, drizzle around croissants in the baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese over tops.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, cheese is melted and bubbly, and edges are crispy.
  10. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped chives and serve warm.

Notes

Day-old croissants work best as they hold their shape better. Can be assembled 24 hours ahead and refrigerated. Reheat leftovers in oven at 325°F for best results.
