Method
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or line with parchment paper.
- Slice each croissant horizontally, creating a top and bottom half, leaving them hinged on one side.
- In a small bowl, combine melted butter with Dijon mustard and garlic powder, whisking until well blended.
- Brush the inside of each croissant with the butter mixture, ensuring even coverage.
- Layer 1 slice of ham and approximately 1/4 cup of shredded Swiss cheese inside each croissant.
- Arrange filled croissants in the prepared baking dish, placing them snugly together.
- Prepare egg wash by beating together egg, milk, and salt. Brush generously over croissant tops.
- If using heavy cream, drizzle around croissants in the baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese over tops.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, cheese is melted and bubbly, and edges are crispy.
- Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped chives and serve warm.
Notes
Day-old croissants work best as they hold their shape better. Can be assembled 24 hours ahead and refrigerated. Reheat leftovers in oven at 325°F for best results.
