Ingredients

Hot Chocolate Base
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup quality white chocolate chopped bar or chips
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest about 1 medium orange
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch sea salt
Garnish
  • 0.5 cup whipped cream
  • 1 tsp orange zest for topping
  • 2 slices fresh orange
  • 2 tbsp melted white chocolate for rim drizzle

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Microplane or grater
  • Glass mugs

Method

  1. Wash the orange thoroughly and zest the outer peel using a microplane, avoiding the white pith.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, and the tablespoon of orange zest.
  3. Heat over medium-low heat until steaming and small bubbles appear (do not boil). Let simmer for 2-3 minutes to infuse.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Add the chopped white chocolate, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt.
  5. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  6. Optional: Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve if you prefer a smooth drink without zest bits.
  7. Dip the rim of your mugs into the extra melted white chocolate to create a drip effect.
  8. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top generously with whipped cream, extra zest, and an orange slice.

Notes

Use high-quality white chocolate containing cocoa butter for the best melt and flavor. For an adult version, add a shot of Grand Marnier.
