Ingredients

For the Cocktail
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 6-8 fresh blackberries
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • crushed ice
  • 1 splash soda water optional
For the Sugar Rim
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 lemon wedge
For Garnish
  • fresh blackberries
  • fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 lemon wheel optional

Equipment

  • Rocks glass or julep cup
  • Muddler
  • Bar spoon
  • Small plate for sugar rim

Method

  1. Prepare the sugar rim by running a lemon wedge around the rim of your glass, then dipping it into granulated sugar on a small plate. Set aside.
  2. In the prepared glass, add the fresh blackberries and mint leaves. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently press and twist to release the juices and oils. Don't over-muddle the mint, as this can make it bitter.
  3. Add the bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup to the glass.
  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it down slightly.
  5. Stir vigorously with a bar spoon for about 15-20 seconds to combine all ingredients and chill the drink.
  6. Top with additional crushed ice to create a mound above the rim of the glass.
  7. Add a splash of soda water if you prefer a lighter, more refreshing cocktail (this step is optional).
  8. Garnish generously with fresh blackberries, a sprig of mint, and a lemon wheel if desired.

Notes

For best results, use fresh, ripe blackberries and quality bourbon. The sugar rim can be customized with colored sugar for special occasions. Store-bought simple syrup works fine, or make your own by dissolving equal parts sugar and water.
